Why You Should Book Your Beach Portrait Session at Sunrise
Sunrise at Black's Beach in San Diego
Not everyone is up for the early alarm sounding, having hair & makeup done while it's still dark outside or fighting off sleepy eyes as you sip on coffee...but let me tell you...arriving to an empty location with the dreamiest sunrise color pallet will make you wanna do it all over again once you're done!
Privacy
Outdoor sessions are my favorite...there is an added element of freedom when you're literally laying in a field of grass, splashing in crashing waves or feeling the wind howl past you on a cliffside. But unless you plan on heading out to remote locations at odd hours, outdoor sessions by nature can't give any guarantee of privacy. Over the years I've collected a handful of locations around San Diego where I can ensure as much seclusion as possible, whether that is due to specific scheduling or simply finding secluded nooks, hidden away from the random passer-by, but at the end of the day shooting in public includes giving up an element of control.
booking your session at sunrise is one of the best ways I've found to add privacy.
Now trust me, even the most nervous of clients get to the end of their session with "excuse me, we are shooting here" level confidence, but it definitely helps to start off without wondering if we may get the occasional stranger's glance.
Coastal Light
Okay, okay - before you say "bUt GoLdEn hOuR!" hear me out... Sunrise has it's own "Blue" and "Golden Hour" - they are just slightly different and in my opinion, better.
I love the creamy, neutral tones that come with shooting just before the sun comes up. There is a stillness and cool energy that comes with the gloomy coastal mornings. The hazy fog creates naturally diffused light, eliminating harsh shadows and overly contrasting colors. Then finally as our session comes toward its end and as the sun begins to creep over the cliffside we can still snag some moments those golden beams peaking out. The San Diego bluffs give us control over the level of warmth we want rather than having to wait out the sun dipping below the horizon.
For this particular session, we got the gorgeous light and privacy found at sunrise, along with the perks that come with the location......if you weren't already aware, Black's Beach is in fact a nude beach. Nothing will take the pressure off even the busiest of San Diego sunsets than passing by strangers already in the buff!
